May Nature Happenings

  • Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, Indigo Buntings, Nighthawks, Wood Thrushes, Veerys and Chimney Swifts return.

  • Orioles return and begin nesting. Be sure to have their feeders, nectar, fruit and jelly out early.

  • Peak of warbler migration happens early in month.

  • Bird courtship & nesting is in full swing, go out in the morning and listen to the Morning Chorus

  • Chickadees and titmice may become scarce at feeders as they nest and raise their young. Use Live mealworms to attract them. Nestlings only eat insects!

  • The first fireflies of the year can be seen.

  • Monarch Butterflies have arrived and are laying eggs on milkweed plants.

  • International Migratory Bird Day & NJ Audubon’s World Series of Birding is Saturday, May 14th is mid-May.
